Description: This listing is for 1 islamic fals coin from the Sultanate of Rum [1077-1308], minted during the reign of Ghiyath al-Din Kay Khusraw I bin Qilich Arslan [1204-1211].Size: 30 mm // 6,20 g ---Historically, muslim countries had 3 kinds of coins: gold coins - called dinar (ﺩﻳﻨﺎﺭ), silver coins - called dirham (درهم), and copper coins - called fals (فلس). The word "dinar" comes from the Latin word "denarius", which was actually a silver coin (not gold), and later replaced by the Antoninianus. The word "dirham" comes from drachma (δραχμή), a kind of silver coin used in Greece. And the word "fals" derived from "follis", a Roman and later Byzantine copper coin. It should be no surprise that the names of islamic coins come from Greek and Latin, since well established trade routes existed between Yemen and Mecca (in the Arabian peninsula) and Byzantine Syria, Egypt and Constantinople. Arabs before Islam used coins from the Eastern Roman and Sassanid Empires in their day to day, and this trend continued in the early period of the Umayyad state. Later, they started minting their own coins in the style of Byzantine coins, then making changes to the style, then transitioning to having their own coinage independent of the Byzantine coinage system, but the names remained. Islamic coins often have the phrase "لا اله إلا الله" (la ilaha illa allah) which means "there is no deity except for one God". This is a very important phrase to muslims, since it encapsulates the core of their belief - strict monotheism - besides this, muslims also believe in (2) the existence of Angels [who are purely good in the sense that they cannot go against God's commands], (3) revelation from God [usually in the form of books, the Quran, the Gospel, the Torah, the Psalms, etc.], (4) prophets to whom God revealed said books [Muhammad, Jesus, Moses, David] and Messengers who generally convey God's message without changing any previous laws from the books [Enoch, Lot, Jacob, Job, Solomon, Elijah, etc.], (5) belief in the Day of Judgement, and (6) belief in Destiny [that God knows everything that has happened, is happing, will happen, as well as everything that could have happened if things were different]. Please check the pictures to see the condition of the coin for yourself, sold as is. CARE AND STORAGE Old coins and banknotes are unique and irreplaceable treasures. Before having any ideas about attempting to clean them, please do your research. What you do you cannot undo! Even water can change the way they look forever. So please please please before doing anything read, watch videos, multiple if necessary as different people can have different opinions and most importantly the coins are not the same (just because cleaning one kind of bronze coins in a specific way is ok, it doesn’t mean it will be fine for all bronze coins and so on). So just be careful. As for storage, there are many good options available, just try to keep in mind that whatever you end up choosing should be acid-free and pvc-free, as normal paper and plastic have chemicals on the surface which can and will damage coins and banknotes if they stay in contact for a long time. In general, anything from well-known brands such as Lindner, Lighthouse, Guardhouse etc are a good go to, velvet-lined trays within a coin cabinet are also a nice option :) —We add new listings every day, you are welcome to check out the other listings in our store 😊Many thanks!
