CIVIL WAR - UNION - RECEIPT SIGNED 01/26/1864 - HFSID 262947 CIVIL WAR (UNION): INVALID CORPS. In a Civil War hospital, William Little signs receipt of 14 month's pay: $115.56, witnessed by two brevet lieutenants of the Invalid Corps. Receipt signed: "William Little", 8x4¾. Judiciary Square Hospital, Washington, D. C., 1864 January 26. Manuscript receipt, signed in a shaky hand, reads in full: "Received of 1st Lieut. James H. Fallon Invalid Corps the sum of one hundred and fifteen (100/56/100) Dollars and fifty six cents being pay in full for Nov. & Dec. 1862 and to December 31st 1863." Witnessed: "Henry D. Bath/2 Lieut. Bv 12 Regt. I. C.", "Sidney B. Smith/2nd Lieut bv 12 Regt. I. C.". The US Army's Invalid Corps, later given a more positive name, Veterans Reserve Corps, was composed of Union soldiers disqualified by injury or illness from front line duty, but still capable of light work. The pre-war medical facilities of Washington, D.C. were woefully inadequate to the casualties sustained in the conflict, and many buildings were converted to hospital use. Through the efforts of the Medical Corps, the Sanitation Commission, the Reserve Volunteer Corps, and many private charities, conditions in the hospitals, including Judiciary Square Hospital (originally cited for its especially bad care) gradually improved. Toned. Top left corner torn. Creased from fold. Otherwise, fine condition. See more material from these signers: CIVIL WAR - UNION See more listings in our MILITARY (2,395) category.
