Description: This is a very rare antique table medal/jetton/token issued by Imperial Russia in 1862. It was issued to commemorate the 1000 years (The Millennium of Russia) of Russian establishment. It is made out of solid bronze. Diameter 28.4mm, thickness 2.7mm; weight 12.3G. This commemorative medal was dedicated to the opening of the monument in Veliky Novgorod "The Millennium of Russia" in 1862. The obverse of this commemorative medal depicts this monument in Veliky Novgorod. Reverse side of the medal has a profile image of Prince Rurik and Emperor of Russia Alexander II. At the bottom it is an image of a double-headed eagle with the crown of the Russian Empire. The grand opening of the monument took place on September 8, 1862 in the presence of the reigning Emperor Alexander II. A beautiful parade was organized in the city, and the celebrations lasted for three days. About 12,000 soldiers and officers and many ordinary people also took part in the parade. During the celebrations, the city's population doubled. The celebrations included a religious procession to the main temple of Novgorod - St. Sophia Cathedral. Very good antique condition.
