This sale is for an antique hardback non-fiction book Famous Pictures By Renowned Artists. This is a 1st printing of the 1st edition and shows a copyright date of 1902. It was published by Thompson & Thomas of Chicago, Illinois, and contains numerous black & white “re-produced” illustrations (probably 300 or more) of famous paintings “Selected from The Best and Most Noted Art Galleries of France, England, Germany, Italy, The United States and Many Other Countries - Produced at a cost of $ 50,000.00.” The book contains 352 pages and most have an illustration printed on them, many of which are focused on the female form. It has a blue fabric covered cover and an oval full color printed paper portrait pasted to the front cover. The photos with this listing are of the actual book you will receive, which is out of my personal collection of 1st edition books. Our store has many unique and interesting items in several different categories from 35 years of our dealing and collecting antiques and collectables.ConditionThe book is in reasonably good condition; keep in mind, this book is over 120 years old. Please look closely at the photos as they are an important part of my description of this book. There are signs of use or age-related wear to the edges & corners of the cover. The pasted oval color portrait shows noticeable wear and there are some stains and wear to both the front and rear covers. There is some soiling to the edges of the text block and to a few of the pages. There is foxing or tanning to some of the paper, especially the front & back pages (see my photos of these). There are stains or foxing to the top of pages 350 & 351 (see my photo of this). I see no markings, writings, or underlining of any kind inside the book, but there are a few minor tears and creases to a couple of pages. The book is not ex-library, not a book club edition, and has not been price clipped or remainder marked. The binding is a bit loose, but everything seems to be stable and intact. I will also mention that the book does have a bit of an “old” paper smell. It comes from a smoke & pet free home. Please keep in mind these photos may be blown up at least 8-10 times normal, so anything you see will look 8-10 times larger in the photos than it really is. Please note: if you see a dark spot in the photos, it is from my camera and is not a mark on the piece.
